Our Origins

A vision born of service

In 2016, then Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen TY Buratai envisioned a university for the Nigerian Army — a hub for solving the technological and operational challenges of the NA through research, innovation and development. The idea came to fruition in 2018 with the establishment of the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB), approved by the Federal Executive Council and endorsed by the National Universities Commission.

During his tenure, Buratai's hometown was targeted twice by Boko Haram insurgents and his farmhouse destroyed. He donated the land to the NA, which transformed it into the Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency (CTCOIN) Museum — now a documentation centre for Operation HADIN KAI, preserving artefacts and relics of Nigeria's fight against terrorism.

Why TBIWP

Confronting our greatest security challenge

Terrorism presents one of the most significant security challenges for Nigeria. In response, the Tukur Yusufu Buratai Counter Terrorism Centre (TYB CTC) was established under NAUB to research counterterrorism strategies and share findings with the NA and other security agencies. In 2020 the centre evolved into the Tukur Buratai Institute for War and Peace (TBIWP), broadening its scope to the study of all aspects of war, peace and security.
